Beautiful Dunedin Architecture

Share |

Possibly the best-known building in the southern half of New Zealand's South IslandDunedin Railway Station is a jewel in the country's architectural crown. Designed by George Troup, the station is the fourth building to have served as Dunedin's railway station. It earned its architect the nickname of "Gingerbread George".

Dunedin New Zealand

Dunedin is another character town with a lot of old buildings and historic architecture. Most notable to visit would be the train station which looks like a castle. It's located just behind the Cadburry factory.

Most restaurants are located around the Octagon area. There are also many churches and museums to visit. So indeed it is a cultural experience to visit Dunedin.

Larnach Castle

Share |

The Larnach Castle is now owned by the Bakers family. It used to be owned by a Scotsman. It has an interesting history.

The garden area is a delight, similar to Edinburgh or English garden. A pleasant cafe, with reasonably-priced food is located at the castle's ballroom.

It is best to visit the castle on sunny, cloudless day. The castle has an astonishing view of the Dunedin coast.

Not such a great dining experience

Share |
I went to Dunedin in 2009, stayed there overnight. It wasn't a great experience then, I thought perhaps because we all felt tired traveling a lot during the last few days.

So I reckon, I should visit Dunedin again this year, 2011.

We stayed at 97Motel - located strategically - a 5 minute walk from the Octagon. It wasn't a great day, some showers and lots of cloud. So we had to eat to the nearest pub we saw within the CBD.

We ate in an Irish pub - first floor, under Bacchus. I can't remember the name - it wasn't memorable and I want to forget the experience. We overpaid for a simple fish and chip dinner - $22. We overpaid for 3 pcs of chicken tapas - $7.5 plus small serving of salmon for $30. It wasn't the best ambiance for the price as well. Word of caution, study the menu carefully per restaurant you visit. Visit cafes instead of restaurants for better meals and more reasonable prices.

Anyway, I took the time to search for this restaurant I visited for the benefit of the other tourists looking for good food and good service. Not recommended: Barakah*

Dunedin's Grand Rail Way Station

Share |

Dunedin has a lot of old, majestic structures, most of the time resembling castles... I heard Dunedin had a lot of Scottish immigrants.

This train station has been converted into a museum. Many tourists visit this station to take photos of the grounds.

This tourist attraction is located 5 minutes walk from the Dunedin Octagon.

Dunedin Real Estate

Share |
Dunedin is one of the fastest growing towns in NZ's south island. It has very beautiful scenery, established gardens, hillside homes and water views. The city is big and spread out. Dunedin Real Estate is surprisingly cheaper than many other NZ cities.
An example is this 4 bedroom house in Andersons Bay. This spacious home is currently for sale on Trademe. Click here. This home is on a decent-sized block of more than 600 sqm.

The home has good heating solutions and renovated.

Before winter really sets in…

Take a trip to Arrowtown!

The lovely little village near Queenstown is best in autumn, when the surrounding hills are covered with autumnal hued leaves. Travel writer Karen Goa shares Arrowtown’s secrets:

“Here families are picnicking, prospectors panning (good luck to them, too), and languid lupins sway like the debutantes of the flower world in pastel pinks and purples, white and yellow..”.
